Feral Hogs

Feral hogs are an invasive species causing millions of dollars in damages to agriculture. Federal, State, and local agencies are working together to manage this threat.  The Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) regulates transportation and holding of live feral hogs.

 

About this Program

Feral hog holding facilities must have a Feral Hog Facility License and anyone transporting live feral hogs must have a Feral Hog Transport Permit. 

A Feral Hog Holding Facility that is also transporting feral hogs must obtain a Feral Hog Transport Permit, in addition to a feral hog facility license.

Feral Hog Facilities must have a Premises ID for the physical location at which the feral hogs will be held. If you are not sure whether you have a Premises ID, please contact the Livestock and Poultry Office.  You can apply for a Premises ID here.

Highlights

  • Feral Hog Transporting

    Transporting live feral hogs in Georgia is illegal without a Feral Hog Transport Permit issued by the GDA. Live feral hogs can be transported to an approved slaughter facility, licensed Feral Hog Facility, or other premises for immediate personal consumption unless a special written exemption is obtained from the Georgia State Veterinarian before transport.

    When transporting, the permit must be with the transporter at all times. The holder of the permit must maintain complete records on all feral hogs transported. Record specifics and other requirements can be found here: https://rules.sos.ga.gov/gac/40-13-15-.05.

  • Feral Hog Holding Facility

    A license is required to operate a Feral Hog Facility that holds live feral hogs. The facility must be pre-inspected before officially receiving a license.

    Feral Hog Facilities must have a Premises ID for the physical location where feral hogs will be held. If you are not sure whether you have a Premises ID, please contact the Livestock and Poultry Office.  You can apply for a Premises ID here.

    All facilities are expected to meet the requirements listed in GDA’s rules and regulations to continue operating. You can read them here:  https://rules.sos.ga.gov/gac/40-13-15-.06.

  • Feral Hog Trap Rental Program

    Feral hogs have caused significant damage to agricultural products and natural resources throughout the state. Many farmers have had difficulty with removal due to the cost and time associated with population control.

    To help combat this problem, the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts GACSD has partnered with multiple state agencies to create a trap rental program. This includes a mandatory workshop to educate farmers about the threats associated with feral hogs.

  • US Swine Health Improvement Plan

    The U.S. Swine Health Improvement Plan (U.S. SHIP) is a cooperative State-Federal-industry program designed to improve the health and marketability of U.S. swine and pork products. Participants in this national pilot program can apply for disease-specific certifications recognized across participating States.

    U.S. SHIP helps protect your pigs by creating a national platform that establishes standards related to biosecurity, traceability, and sampling and testing.
