Herring recalled due to botulism potential

Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black is alerting Georgians to the recall of some herring from Russia because it has the potential to cause botulism. Georgia Department of Agriculture inspectors will be checking grocery stores and food warehouses to make sure the recalled product is removed from sale. Here is the recall announcement from the Food and Drug Administration:

TGF Production LLC Issues An Alert On Uneviscerated Fish

TGF Production LLC, 191 Centre Street, Brooklyn, NY, is recalling “Herring Fish in Salt Water.” The product was discovered by a New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspector during a routine inspection. Subsequent analysis of the product by New York State Food Laboratory personnel confirmed that the herring was not properly eviscerated prior to processing.

This product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum spores, which can cause botulism, a serious and potentially fatal food-borne illness.

The sale of this type of fish is prohibited under the New York State Agriculture and Markets regulations because Clostridium botulinum spores are more likely to be concentrated in the viscera than any other portion of the fish. Uneviscerated fish have been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning. Symptoms of botulism include blurred or double vision, general weakness, poor reflexes, difficulty in swallowing and respiratory paralysis.

The recalled Herring Fish in Salt Water comes in a 1.300g (2.86lb) round plastic container with the code number: 20.02.11 PVI44AMIC2. It is a product of Russia. Herring Fish in Salt Water was sold nationwide.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. Consumers who have purchased Herring Fish in Salt Water are advised not to eat it and should return it to the place of purchase. Consumers with questions may contact TGF Production LLC, at 646 546 5847.
