State Agriculture Dept. stops food sales at Lawrenceville store

The Georgia Department of Agriculture has stopped food sales at a Lawrenceville convenience store due to a rodent infestation.

The department issued a Stop-Sale Order for Shell Food Mart, 850 Scenic Highway, Lawrenceville, after discovering the store was infested with mice.

The store will not be able to resume food sales until authorized by the department.  “All contaminated products must be destroyed, the store cleaned and a pest control program put in place,” said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.

During a routine inspection, an inspector for the department found fresh and dried rodent droppings, urine stains on packages of foods, a decomposed mouse on a glue board and live mice in the store.   “Several live mice fell out of one of the products our inspector picked up,” said Commissioner Irvin.

The store was also cited for having carbonation build-up on nozzles of soda fountains, not having any hot water, improperly stored products in a storage area and no weather stripping on the rear exit.

“The store will be cited for an administrative hearing,” said Irvin.
