MB - Dept. Announces Agriculture Day Contest

To highlight the importance of farmers and agribusinesses to our state, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has designated March 18, 2010 for its observance of Agriculture Day in Georgia.  To celebrate, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Council Inc. are sponsoring an essay and art contest for Georgia students. 

Contest Rules

Theme:  “Agriculture:  Touching Every Georgia County

Students submitting an essay in the contest should explain how agriculture impacts their county and/or touches the lives of its citizens.  Students in grades 4-8 should prepare an essay of 100-250 words; students in grades 9-12 should prepare an essay of 250-750 words.

Students submitting art may draw or paint a picture directly relating to the theme, or may draw or paint a Georgia farm scene instead.  The art category has three divisions: grades K-3, 4-8 and 9-12.  Art may be done in pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, oils, acrylics, ink or a combination of these.  No photographs will be accepted.  Entries should be at least 8.5 x 11 inches and not larger than 28 x 30 inches.

The student’s name, age, grade, school, home county, home telephone number (including area code) and teacher's name must be typed or printed legibly in ink and attached to the top of the essays.  The same contact information must be printed legibly on the back of each piece of art.

The contest is restricted to Georgia students.  Contest entries should be mailed to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Room 224, 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30334-4250.

Deadline for entries is February 3, 2010 (postmarked).

All entries become the property of the Georgia Department of Agriculture and cannot be returned.

First place winners in each division will be awarded $200 with second place winners receiving $100 and third place winners receiving $50.  In addition, all winners will receive commemorative certificates.  Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin will invite the first place winners to Atlanta for a special awards presentation.  Winners will be announced in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin.
