New Network Forming for Organic & Sustainable Farmers

Georgia Organics, in partnership with the USDA Risk Management Agency, is putting together a centralized database network for farmers who are new to using organic and sustainable growing methods. The purpose of the database is to identify services and support needed by these farmers to increase organic and sustainable farm production in the state.

GO is gathering relevant information about these farms’ existing operations or planned enterprises. Farmers and prospective farmers who are seeking information on production and marketing practices, local and regional food systems development, or other sustainable farming topics can join the network by submitting their location, needs, and questions directly into the network's database at this link:  www.georgiaorganics.org /farmer_network/entry.php, or they can register by phone or email by contacting Karen Adler at 404-633-4534 or karen@georgiaorganics.org.

A grower education advisory team will be contacting the farmers who join the network to learn more about their needs and goals, and to provide information on training opportunities, events, educational resources, and marketing support currently available in the state. The grower education advisory team includes representatives from the University of Georgia, Fort Valley State University, experienced farmers, organic certifying agents, and staff from Georgia Organics and other organizations.

“Creating this network is the first step in developing a clear and useful picture of the sustainable, organic production in Georgia,” said GO Executive Director Alice Rolls. “In addition to identifying gaps, the information shared will be used to build communication bridges, pool existing resources, and take new steps forward in the fast-growing world of local, sustainable and organic farming in state.”
