Saddle Club Hosts Workdays To Construct Park Trails

The Cherokee County Saddle Club (CCSC) in partnership with the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency (CRPA) is constructing a new, approximately 12-mile, public trail park that will be the first of its kind in Cherokee County.  Horseback riders and hikers will have the opportunity to enjoy Cherokee County’s mountain beauty in more than 500 acres of county-owned green space.

The environmentally friendly trails of interconnecting loops traversing hardwoods, streams and mountain scenery will be constructed with 100 percent volunteer time and donated machinery coordinated by CCSC.  Cherokee Recreation and Parks has approved $50,000 of its green space funds for the project and has received a $75,000 grant from the Georgia DNR Recreational Trails Program for the construction of the trailhead parking area, restrooms, signage and the purchase of trail building equipment.

The initial phase, which will encompass about 5 1/2 miles of trails, the parking area with restroom facilities, information kiosk and trail head, is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.

CCSC is hosting public work days the second Saturday of each month.  If you would like to help, contact Cindy Young at Cdingodog1@aol.com.
